[1904-ANWG] Updated agenda for the February meeting

All,

A few updates for our agenda.

1)      Request for agenda time for “Simplifying RoX Communications” by Kevin Bross has been withdrawn.

2)      Added a slot for the discussion on 1904.2 PAR scope (see below)

1904.2 PAR scope discussion:

In my 1904.2 introduction to the joint session, I show the following as the key goals of 1904.2 project:

1. Allow multiple L2 management channels (tunnels) reaching various levels of network hierarchy

– Devices within CO (aggregation switches, OLT, CLT)

– Devices in the access area (FCU, ONU/ONT, demark devices)

– Operator-managed devices in customer premises (HGW, Firewalls, VOIP phones, STBs)

(see http://www.ieee1904.org/email/msg00095.html)

To my understanding, this is correct and is consistent with the WG discussions and contributions we had to this day.

However, for several meeting cycles, Hesham has been pointing out that the 1904.2 PAR scope seems to be limited only to CPE devices. The approved 1904.2 scope says:

“5.2 Scope: This standard describes a management channel for customer-premises equipment (CPE) connected to Ethernet-based subscriber

access networks. The key characteristics of the specified management channel are:

-          Multi-hop capabilities to allow management of various CPE devices located behind an Optical Network Unit (ONU), a Coaxial Network Unit (CNU), a Residential Gateway (RGW), etc.

-          Extensibility to accommodate new management protocols and/or new types of CPE devices.

-          Broadcast/multicast capabilities to allow simultaneous (synchronized) configuration of multiple devices.

-          Encryption capabilities to ensure secure access to managed CPE devices by the network operators.

The standard describes the message format as well as processing operations and forwarding rules at the intermediate nodes.

I believe that the reason for the scope written as it is was our understanding at that time that a management channel established from a management server to a CPE device will also allow the management of all intermediate devices.  But I agree that this is not obvious to external readers.

To resolve this, I am allocating a timeslot at the meeting to discuss whether we need to modify our PAR to explicitly state that management tunnels can be established to various devices in the CO, in the access, and in customer premises. If we do decide to modify the PAR, we will form an ad hoc to propose a new text for the March/April meeting.
